Boiling Eggshells: How to Use Them for Gardening, Cleaning, and More

Before reusing eggshells, rinse them thoroughly to remove remaining egg residue. For uses where cleanliness is particularly important, they can also be boiled for several minutes and then allowed to dry completely on a clean towel or baking sheet.

Once dry, store them in a clean container until needed. Dry shells are also much easier to crush or grind.

Step 2: Use Them in the Garden

Add them to compost: Crushed eggshells can be added to a compost pile, where they gradually break down and contribute calcium and other minerals.

Add them to soil: Finely ground shells can also be mixed into garden soil. Keep in mind that eggshells decompose slowly, so they are better viewed as a gradual soil addition rather than a quick fertilizer.

Try them around plants: Coarsely crushed shells are sometimes used as a physical barrier against slugs and other crawling pests, although results can vary and they should not be relied upon as a complete pest-control method.

Use them as seed starters: Carefully preserved shell halves can hold a small amount of soil for starting seeds. When transplanting, crack or crush the shell so the young roots can expand easily.

Step 3: Use Them for Cleaning

Crushed eggshells can provide mild abrasion when combined with warm, soapy water, making them useful for scrubbing some durable pots, pans, or other surfaces.

Avoid using them on materials that scratch easily, and test a small area first if you are uncertain.

A Useful Habit, Not a Miracle

Eggshells do not need extraordinary claims to be worth reusing. They will not transform a garden overnight, replace proper fertilizer, or solve every household cleaning problem.

Their value is much simpler.

Something that would normally go directly into the bin can sometimes serve one more purpose first.

A little care, less waste, and thoughtful use of what we already have can turn an ordinary kitchen leftover into a modest but useful household resource.
