With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of this beloved actor who gave us so much at 84

Viator wrote alongside a photograph of her husband.

Born on August 30, 1941, in Tarboro, North Carolina, Jones was raised in Portsmouth, Virginia. Long before audiences knew him as Cooter Davenport, he had already begun developing an interest in entertainment and performing.

While attending the University of North Carolina, Jones studied radio, television, and motion pictures. He also became involved in theater, gaining experience that would eventually help lead him toward a professional acting career.

During the 1970s, Jones steadily built his résumé with appearances in several film productions. His credits included *Together for Days* in 1972, *The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings* in 1976, *Smokey and the Bandit* in 1977, and *The Lincoln Conspiracy*, also released in 1977.

But the role that would change his life arrived in 1979.

Jones was cast as Cooter Davenport in *The Dukes of Hazzard*, the enormously popular television series centered around the adventures of the Duke family in fictional Hazzard County.

With his warm personality, humor, and unmistakable presence, Cooter quickly became a fan favorite. As the local mechanic and trusted friend of Bo and Luke Duke, Jones helped make the character one of the show’s most recognizable supporting figures.

He appeared in 141 episodes between 1979 and 1985, becoming permanently associated with a television series that continued attracting devoted fans long after its original run ended.

Yet acting represented only one chapter of Jones’ remarkable life.

After his years in Hollywood, he turned his attention toward public service and entered the political arena. A Democrat, Jones first ran for Congress in 1986. Although he narrowly lost that election, he did not abandon his political ambitions.

In 1989, Jones was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He went on to serve two terms in Congress, adding an unusual political chapter to a career already defined by television and film.

Few performers can say they became part of an iconic television series and later served as an elected member of Congress, but Jones managed to leave his mark in both worlds.

Even as the years passed, however, he never completely separated himself from *The Dukes of Hazzard*. Jones remained closely connected to the show’s legacy and to the character that had introduced him to millions of viewers.

For generations of fans, he remained Cooter — the friendly mechanic who was always ready to lend the Duke boys a hand when trouble arrived in Hazzard County.

News of his death marks the end of an extraordinary journey that stretched from theater and Hollywood to television fame and the halls of Congress.

Behind those accomplishments was also a husband deeply loved by his wife, whose farewell captured the personal loss behind the public headlines.

Ben Jones lived a life filled with acting, politics, friendships, family, and the affection of countless fans who continued to remember his most famous character decades later.

His work ensured that Cooter Davenport became a lasting part of television history, while his years in public service demonstrated that Jones was never afraid to pursue an entirely different path when a new chapter called.

Ben Jones was 84.

May he rest in peace. Our deepest condolences go out to Alma Viator, his family, friends, former colleagues, and the many *Dukes of Hazzard* fans mourning his passing.
