Weeks earlier, I had discovered messages in which Teresa repeatedly encouraged Rodrigo to doubt my fidelity. I also explained that blue eyes could come from a recessive family trait. The second envelope contained the financial records. I handed it directly to Rodrigo. I brought out a small cake, lit Lucía’s candle, and sang happy birthday with the relatives who had come to celebrate her rather than judge her. Afterward, I left with my daughter. The marriage ended seven months later. Rodrigo gradually acknowledged how deeply he had allowed his mother’s influence to damage our family, and I gave him room to rebuild his relationship with Lucía through consistent actions as her father. There were no grand speeches and no expensive decorations meant to impress anyone.
