Carl decided to celebrate his fortieth birthday with a pool party.

Together, Alice and I returned downstairs.

Rather than creating a public confrontation, I simply thanked everyone for coming and said I needed to end the gathering early because of a serious family matter.

Afterward, only close family remained.

Later that evening, after the house had grown quiet, I told Carl our marriage could not continue as it had been.
