I told Austin I intended to file for divorce and contacted my attorney, Cynthia Strickland, to make sure everything that followed was handled properly.

When auditors began examining the records more closely, Austin reportedly attempted to alter financial information and pressured a junior employee, Cindy Ritchie, to assist him.

The divorce proceedings continued separately.
Christina remained angry and at one point appeared outside my new residence to protest what she believed I had done to her son. Rather than argue with her, I allowed the legal process to establish the boundaries between us.

During the divorce hearing, the court upheld our prenuptial agreement. My corporate holdings remained protected, while property belonging to the marriage was divided according to the law.
Our shared penthouse had to be sold.
During the final appraisal, tensions escalated, and Christina threw a glass vase in my direction before turning her anger toward Austin. My friend Megan moved me away from the confrontation while the incident was documented by the officials present.
Watching the family turn against one another was not satisfying.
It was simply sad.
Money had concealed fractures that had apparently existed for years. Once the money disappeared, those fractures became impossible to ignore.

When everything was finally settled, I did something Austin had once considered foolish.

I locked the bakery door behind him.

Some endings do not need revenge to feel complete. Sometimes justice is allowing consequences to take their proper course, setting a firm boundary, and refusing to carry bitterness into the life that comes afterward.
I returned to the kitchen, where another batch of bread was nearly ready.
The room filled slowly with the scent of warm pastry.
