World’s oldest living woman, 116, reveals a surprising secret to her long life

Her words reflected a philosophy centered on remaining calm, avoiding unnecessary conflict, and maintaining personal independence.

Ethel became the oldest living person in the United Kingdom in 2022.

Following the death of Brazilian nun Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas in April 2025, Ethel became the oldest verified living person in the world.

Her achievements also attracted attention from the British royal family.

King Charles III sent her a letter for her 115th birthday, describing the occasion as a remarkable milestone and offering his warm wishes.

When Ethel celebrated her 116th birthday on August 21, 2025, she became the first verified British person known to have reached that age.

During her later years, she remained impressively active and independent.

Ethel continued driving until she was 97 and played contract bridge well beyond her 100th birthday.

She lived with her daughters for many years before moving into a Surrey care home after her younger daughter, Anne, died in 2020.

Staff members at the care facility praised her strength, wisdom, and positive spirit.

“Your strength, spirit and wisdom are an inspiration to us all. Here’s to celebrating your remarkable journey.”

Ethel Caterham’s life cannot be reduced to a number.

Her story reflects independence, resilience, curiosity, and an ability to adapt through more than a century of enormous social and technological change.

She lived through celebrations, wars, personal losses, and historic transformations while continuing to approach life with quiet determination.

Her simple advice may not offer a guaranteed formula for longevity, but it provides a meaningful reminder that peace of mind, emotional balance, and the freedom to live authentically can be valuable at any age.

Ethel’s remarkable journey stands as a celebration of endurance and a life shaped not only by how long she lived, but by the history, relationships, and experiences she carried with her.
