Parents finally win battle to call baby ‘banned name’

The controversy centered on the name Lucifer and its widespread association with the devil in Christian tradition.

Dan attempted to explain that he and Mandy were not religious and had chosen the name because of its older meaning.

“I tried to explain that we are not religious people, and Lucifer in Greek means ‘light-bringer’ and ‘morning’ but she wouldn’t listen.”

The registrar reportedly encouraged the couple to choose a different legal name while continuing to call the child Lucifer privately at home.

Because the name is prohibited in some countries, including New Zealand, the registrar was reportedly uncertain whether it could legally be accepted in the United Kingdom. Dan and Mandy were therefore told they might have to wait while officials investigated the matter.

The couple said they were shocked by the way the appointment unfolded.

“We were gobsmacked with her behavior.”

Eventually, the registrar approved the name, allowing Lucifer to appear officially on the child’s birth certificate.

Dan said the decision did not appear to be made enthusiastically.

“Eventually she did it, but it was through gritted teeth.”

He added that he and Mandy had not chosen the name to provoke anyone. They simply considered it distinctive and attractive.

“Honestly, we just thought it was a nice name… a unique one. We didn’t expect to get so much grief about it.”

Derbyshire County Council, where the couple lived, later responded to the incident. The council apologized if the family felt offended but explained that registrars are expected to provide guidance when names may carry meanings or associations that parents have not fully considered.

“We apologize if they were offended but it is the job of our registrars to advise in these matters as sometimes people are not aware of certain meanings or associations around certain names.”

The case illustrates the difficult balance between parental freedom and a child’s future well-being. Some people believe parents should have broad freedom to choose meaningful or unconventional names, while others argue that officials are right to raise concerns when a name carries strong negative associations.

Although Dan and Mandy ultimately succeeded in registering the name Lucifer, their experience showed how deeply personal naming decisions can quickly become a matter of public debate.
