Empty lobster shells covered the table.

Plates had been picked clean.

Beatrice, my husband Thomas, and his pregnant sister Cassandra sat comfortably finishing the last bites.

When I asked where my dinner was, Beatrice pointed toward the kitchen.

A cold plate waited for me.

On it sat a dry lobster head and a few stale tortillas.

Thomas had secretly obtained personal loans using money I earned, leaving me exposed to financial consequences I had never agreed to.

The legal records also confirmed that I controlled the lease on our apartment and the property where Cassandra operated her nail salon.

The confidence they had shown the day before disappeared quickly.

Divorce proceedings followed.

I recovered my assets, established a stable home for Oliver, and closed the chapter that had mistaken my generosity for obligation.

Months later, I sold my previous business and opened a new salon called Rebirth.

Many of the women I hired were rebuilding their own lives after difficult circumstances.

It became more than a workplace.

It became a place where new beginnings were possible.

On opening day, Thomas arrived carrying flowers and asking for another chance.

I thanked him for coming.

Then I handed the bouquet back.

“I was your wife,” I said quietly.

“Not your provider.”

That evening, Oliver and I celebrated at a seafood restaurant.

When the lobster arrived, he looked at the plate and hesitated.

“Should I wait until everyone else is finished?” he asked softly.

I smiled.

“No,” I told him.

“You never have to wait for leftovers again.”

Watching him eat without fear taught me something I wish I had learned much earlier.
