HOW TO REMOVE SET-IN GREASE STAINS FROM LAUNDRY

If you notice a grease stain on a shirt or other washable fabric, try these steps:

1. Blot the stain with a clean paper towel or cloth to remove excess oil. Avoid rubbing, as this can push the grease deeper into the fabric.
2. Apply a small amount of grease-cutting dish soap directly to the stain.
3. Gently work it into the fabric using your fingers or a soft toothbrush.
4. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes so the soap has time to break down the oils.
5. Wash the garment according to the care label using the warmest water that is safe for the fabric.
6. Check the stain before drying. If it hasn’t completely disappeared, repeat the treatment. Avoid using the dryer until the stain is gone, as heat can make oil stains much more difficult to remove.

Why It Works

Dish soap is specifically formulated to dissolve grease and oil. While laundry detergents are designed to clean a wide variety of stains, a grease-fighting dish soap can provide extra cleaning power when dealing with cooking oil, salad dressing, butter, or other oily substances.

A Few Tips

• Treat stains as soon as possible for the best chance of removal.
• Always test any cleaning product on a hidden area of the garment first, especially on delicate or brightly colored fabrics.
• Follow the clothing manufacturer’s care instructions.
• For delicate materials such as silk or wool, consider professional cleaning rather than using dish soap.

Persistent grease stains don’t necessarily mean your favorite shirt is ruined. A simple pre-treatment with a grease-cutting dish soap before laundering can often help lift stubborn oil stains that regular washing leaves behind.

While no single method works for every fabric or every stain, treating the spot promptly and avoiding the dryer until the stain is completely gone can greatly improve your chances of restoring your clothing.
