Koller publicly revealed his diagnosis in June 2024 after doctors discovered a cancerous tumor in his esophagus that had extended into his stomach. The diagnosis forced Sick of It All to cancel a planned European tour while he began treatment.
Throughout his illness, Koller continued to share updates with fans.
After undergoing chemotherapy, he announced in May 2025 that scans had shown no evidence of cancer and said he was eager to move forward and get the band active again.
Unfortunately, the relief did not last.
In September 2025, Koller revealed that the cancer had returned, telling supporters that he was “back to square one.”
His death came shortly before Sick of It All was due to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
The band was formed in Queens, New York, in 1986 by Koller, his guitarist brother Pete Koller, and drummer Armand Majidi. Over the following four decades, Sick of It All became one of the most enduring and influential groups to emerge from the New York hardcore scene.
Known for relentless live performances, uncompromising music, and a powerful connection with audiences, the band released 12 studio albums and toured around the world.
Koller’s commanding vocals became central to the group’s identity, while his humor, warmth, and energetic stage presence earned him admiration far beyond the hardcore community.
In its tribute, Sick of It All remembered Koller as both an iconic frontman and an irreplaceable friend.
The band said he had a remarkable ability to lift people’s spirits during shows, often using a smile or sarcastic remark to connect with fans. They added that he won people over everywhere the group performed, regardless of culture or country.
Musicians, fans, and friends have since shared tributes recognizing Koller’s influence on hardcore music and the personal kindness he showed throughout his career.
His death marks the loss of one of the defining voices of New York hardcore.
Adenocarcinoma is a type of cancer that begins in gland-producing cells found in the lining of many organs. It can develop in areas including the esophagus, stomach, lungs, pancreas, prostate, and colon.
Koller was diagnosed with esophageal adenocarcinoma, a cancer that begins in glandular cells in the lower portion of the esophagus.
Possible symptoms of esophageal cancer include difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, worsening indigestion or heartburn, chest pain or pressure, coughing, and hoarseness. Symptoms may not appear during the earliest stages of the disease.
These symptoms can also be caused by many noncancerous conditions. However, anyone experiencing persistent or worrying changes should speak with a healthcare professional rather than attempting to diagnose the cause themselves.
