I just found this on my bed. It’s a little creepy. What is it?

One of the most likely explanations is that they are softgel capsules, commonly used for dietary supplements or medications. Fish oil, krill oil, vitamin E, and certain herbal supplements are often sold in smooth, translucent capsules that range from amber to dark reddish-brown.

If someone in your household takes supplements, a few capsules may have fallen from a bottle, pocket, purse, or bedside organizer. Their shiny, uniform appearance closely matches many commercially available softgels.

2. Plant Seeds

Some plant seeds can resemble capsules at first glance. Certain fruit seeds are smooth, dark, and oval-shaped, although they usually have a harder shell and a less glossy finish than softgel capsules.

If you’ve recently eaten fruit in the bedroom or have pets that carry seeds indoors, this is another possibility, though generally less likely.

3. Not Typical Insect Eggs or Droppings

Many people’s first concern is bed bugs or another household pest. Fortunately, these objects do not closely resemble typical insect eggs, larvae, or droppings.

• Bed bug eggs are tiny, white, and rice-shaped.
• Cockroach egg cases (oothecae) are generally larger, ridged, and rectangular rather than smooth and rounded.
• Insect droppings are usually dark, irregular, and much smaller.

Because the objects are smooth, shiny, and uniformly shaped, they are unlikely to be common insect remains.

4. Candy or Decorative Food Items

Some candies, gummies, or edible decorations can resemble glossy capsules. If children have been eating snacks in the bedroom or small treats were accidentally dropped, this could explain the discovery.

Although this is possible, it is usually easy to identify by smell or texture.

What Should You Do?

If you find mysterious objects on your bed:

• Examine them closely without crushing them.
• Check nearby medication or supplement bottles to see if any capsules are missing.
• Look around the room for additional objects.
• If you suspect pests because you’ve also noticed bites, stains, shed skins, or live insects, inspect the mattress seams and consider consulting a pest control professional.

Although discovering unfamiliar objects in your bed can be unsettling, the most likely explanation for smooth, reddish-brown capsules is that they are softgel supplements or medications, not insect eggs. Their size, color, and glossy appearance closely match many common vitamin and fish oil capsules.

If you’re ever uncertain about what you’ve found, avoid making assumptions. Compare the objects with any supplements in your home, and if concerns about pests remain, perform a thorough inspection or seek advice from a qualified professional.
