According to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, Hottle was one of two passengers in a vehicle that left the roadway and struck a culvert in Ijamsville, Maryland, during the early hours of Tuesday morning. She was transported to a nearby trauma center, where she later died from her injuries. Authorities believe excessive speed may have contributed to the crash, which remains under investigation.
Born into a multigenerational Deaf family, Kaylee was a native user of American Sign Language (ASL) and became an inspiring figure for Deaf representation in film. She made her feature film debut in 2021 as Jia, the young Deaf girl who shares a unique bond with Kong in Godzilla vs. Kong. She returned to the role in the 2024 sequel, earning widespread praise for her heartfelt performance.
Her work resonated with audiences around the world and earned her a Saturn Award nomination for Best Younger Performer. Beyond the MonsterVerse films, Hottle also appeared in an episode of Magnum P.I., while serving as a role model for countless young Deaf viewers who finally saw themselves represented in a major Hollywood franchise.
The devastating news was confirmed by her father, Joshua Hottle, in an emotional Facebook Live video delivered in American Sign Language. In the heartfelt message, he shared that he was traveling from Texas to Maryland following the tragic accident.
The Texas School for the Deaf, where Kaylee was a student preparing to begin her senior year, also paid tribute, describing her death as a profound loss for the school community. Counseling and support services were made available to students and staff as they mourned one of their own.
Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, fans, and members of the entertainment industry. Several of her co-stars, including Millie Bobby Brown, shared messages of grief, remembering Kaylee not only for her remarkable talent but also for her kindness and joyful spirit.
