Chapter 6: Why They Waited
For a moment, anger rose in me so fast I could hardly see.
Not at Emily or Grace.
At everyone who had stolen eighteen years of truth from us.
“Why didn’t you tell me when you found it?” I asked.
Emily lowered her head.
“We were scared.”
Grace wiped her tears with the back of her hand.
“You always told us finding us saved your life. We didn’t want to take that away from you.”
I stood up slowly.
Both girls flinched, like they expected the truth to create distance between us.
That broke me.
I pulled them both into my arms.
“Listen to me,” I said, holding them tight. “There is no version of this where I hate you.”
Emily began sobbing against my shoulder.
Grace whispered, “But if you had known, everything would have been different.”
I closed my eyes.
“No,” I said. “I still would have loved you from the first second I saw you.”
Because that part had always been true.
Blood or not.
They were mine.
