Why Melania Trump Will Never Leave Her Husband Despite His Scandals

Kelly WhitewoodBy Kelly WhitewoodJune 17, 20266 Mins Read

For years, the world has tried to interpret Melania Trump’s silence.

Some have described it as coldness, while others have called it strength. But according to those who spent years close to her, silence has always been one of her defining traits.

Now 56 years old, the former model continues to be one of the most private First Ladies in modern American history, maintaining an image of composure despite decades of headlines surrounding her husband, 80-year-old President Donald Trump.

One person who knew her particularly well was Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, a former Vogue executive, author, adviser, and once one of Melania’s closest friends.

The two met in 2003 while Stephanie was working in fashion and Melania was an established model dating Donald Trump.

Over the next 15 years, their friendship grew considerably.

“We shared a lot over 15 years,” Stephanie said during a 2020 interview with ABC News.

After Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election, Stephanie helped organize the inauguration and later became an unpaid adviser to the First Lady.

That position allowed her to observe Melania’s private reactions during some of the most turbulent moments in modern political history.

One of those moments came when the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape surfaced during the presidential campaign.

The recording, which captured Donald Trump making offensive comments about women, sparked immediate outrage and widespread speculation about how Melania would react.

Stephanie expected to find her devastated.

Instead, she found something entirely different.

“She was radiant, she was smiling,” Stephanie recalled. “It was as if nothing happened.”

Trying to ease the tension, Stephanie even joked with her.

“I said to her, ‘How many times have you heard the words ‘p—-’ and ‘president’ in the same sentence?’ And we burst out laughing.”

For Stephanie, that moment revealed something important.

“She knows who she married,” she said. “She knew what she was getting into, and so did he.”

Even after their friendship eventually ended on difficult terms, Stephanie continued to admire Melania’s ability to remain composed under pressure.

Another former insider, ex-White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham, offered a similar perspective in 2024.

Speaking to CNN, Grisham acknowledged that the constant public scandals surrounding Donald Trump could be embarrassing for Melania, but she dismissed suggestions that she would leave him.

“She knew who she married,” Grisham said. “She’s happy, she’s got a very good life. She’s not going anywhere; that’s been proven.”

Over the years, Melania has also made it clear that politics was never her passion.

According to multiple reports, she intentionally keeps a distance from political life whenever possible.

Sources close to her previously revealed that she had little interest in fully returning to public duties.

“Being first lady again is not what she wants,” one source said. “For her, it was a chapter — and it’s over, and that’s that.”

Her reluctance to appear at campaign events has been widely documented.

One political operative from Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign admitted that staff members eventually stopped asking her to attend certain appearances because she repeatedly declined.

Even during her time in the White House, Melania maintained an unusually low profile.

She conducted very few television interviews and almost no print interviews, an extraordinary level of privacy for someone occupying one of the world’s most visible roles.

Long before she entered politics, however, Melania lived a remarkably disciplined life.

Friends from her modeling years describe her as someone who preferred routines over parties.

She reportedly exercised regularly, maintained strict eating habits, and favored quiet evenings over New York nightlife.

Her idea of going out was often dinner at a restaurant followed by an early return home.

“She was reserved,” her longtime friend Edit Molnar once said. “The first party she ever came to with me was the one she met Donald at.”

Paolo Zampolli, the founder of the modeling agency that discovered her and brought her to New York in 1996, echoed that sentiment.

“She never dated anyone in New York before Donald. She only went to movies by herself and to the gym,” he said.

Over the years, several men have publicly claimed to have dated Melania before she met Donald Trump.

One of them, Peter Butoln, described her as his first love during their teenage years in Slovenia.

“It was my first love,” he said. “My first real love.”

However, representatives for Melania later stated that he was never actually her boyfriend.

Another former boyfriend, Jure Zorcic, spoke openly about their relationship during the early 1990s.

He described her as ambitious and determined from a young age.

“She wanted to live abroad, in Italy, France, a life of fashion,” he said.

Jure recalled reconnecting with her years later after she had moved to New York and built a successful modeling career.

Looking back, he called her marriage to Donald Trump fate.

“Nobody believed 20 years ago that she would live at the top of the world, on Fifth Avenue in Trump Tower — even her,” he said.

People close to Melania have often pointed to her upbringing as one reason her marriage has endured.

Friends say she and Donald complement each other in ways outsiders do not always understand.

Melania herself has repeatedly pushed back against assumptions made about her marriage.

She once dismissed suggestions that she chose Donald for money, saying material possessions cannot replace emotional connection.

“You can’t talk with beautiful things. You can’t hug beautiful things,” she explained.

She has also joked that one secret to a successful marriage is having separate bathrooms.

And when discussing public criticism, her response has remained consistent.

“They don’t know me,” she once said, while describing Donald as “very kind” and “very charming.”

Most recently, Melania stood beside her husband once again during a highly publicized UFC event held at the White House in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary and Donald Trump’s 80th birthday.

The event transformed the South Lawn into a massive arena and attracted thousands of attendees, including prominent politicians, international leaders, and business executives.

Throughout the evening, Melania remained by the president’s side, speaking with him during the fights while cameras captured their interactions.

Her journey from a small town in Slovenia to becoming First Lady of the United States remains one of the most unusual stories in modern public life.

For decades, she has remained disciplined, private, and selective about what she reveals to the world.

Whether people admire her elegance or criticize her silence, one thing has become increasingly clear over time.

Melania Trump has always preferred to define herself on her own terms rather than through everyone else’s expectations.
