Karmelo Anthony’s Court Case Ends with Dramatic Moments as Mother Breaks Down — Details

Kelly WhitewoodBy Kelly WhitewoodJune 10, 20266 Mins Read

The case centered on the death of Austin Metcalf, a Texas teenager who was fatally stabbed during a confrontation at a high school track meet on April 2, 2025.

After days of testimony, a Collin County jury deliberated for less than three hours before unanimously finding Anthony guilty of murder.

While the verdict itself was significant, the emotional reactions that followed revealed just how deeply the tragedy had affected everyone involved.

When the jury announced its decision, courtroom observers reported that Anthony showed little visible emotion. He remained largely expressionless as the guilty verdict was read.

    His family reacted very differently.

His mother, Kala Hayes, broke down in tears as the reality of the verdict settled over the courtroom. Supporters seated nearby also became emotional, with several visibly crying as Anthony was escorted away.

Across the room, Austin’s twin brother, Hunter Metcalf, leaned forward in his chair as the verdict was announced.

For the Metcalf family, however, the guilty verdict was only part of the process.

The next question was how long Anthony would spend in prison.

The case immediately moved into the sentencing phase, where both prosecutors and defense attorneys presented arguments about punishment.

Anthony’s legal team argued that the stabbing occurred under what Texas law describes as “sudden passion” — an intense emotional reaction that leaves little time for reflection.

If jurors accepted that argument, Anthony could receive a substantially lighter sentence.

Before deliberations on punishment began, Anthony’s mother took the witness stand.

Defense attorney Mike Howard offered her water and tissues before she began speaking.

The moment she started talking about her son, emotion overwhelmed her.

“He’s my oldest,” Hayes told jurors through tears. “He’ll always be my baby. I love him very much.”

When asked whether Anthony regretted what happened, she answered without hesitation.

“Yes. I know my son, and he’s very sorry for what he did.”

As her testimony ended, she made one final plea to the jury.

“Please have mercy on my son.”

    The courtroom grew quiet.

Then came one of the most emotional moments of the entire proceeding.

Austin’s twin brother, Hunter, stood to deliver his victim impact statement.

Before speaking about his brother, he made a direct request.

Anthony had reportedly spent much of the hearing looking downward.

Hunter asked him to look up.

    Asked him to be respectful.

Asked him to look him in the eye.

    Anthony eventually lifted his head.

Hunter then spoke about the loss that had forever changed his life.

He described Austin not only as his brother but as his best friend.

The person who was supposed to be there for future milestones.

The person who was supposed to become an uncle to his children someday.

“You took a son, a brother, a friend, and my best friend from this world,” Hunter said emotionally.

He spoke about watching his mother cry herself to sleep.

About waking up every morning knowing his twin was gone.

Then he delivered words that stunned the courtroom.

“Now I want everything taken from you.”

Friends embraced Hunter after he finished speaking, and members of the Metcalf family eventually left the courtroom.

But the emotional moments were far from over.

As jurors deliberated on sentencing, tension filled the courthouse.

    Hours passed.

Then, shortly before the jury returned, observers noticed a significant change in Anthony’s demeanor.

According to courtroom reports, he sat with his head lowered and appeared to be sobbing.

A female attorney seated beside him attempted to comfort him as they waited for the jury’s decision.

The image contrasted sharply with the emotionless appearance many observers had noted earlier in the day.

Finally, at approximately 7:30 p.m., jurors returned.

    The courtroom fell silent.

Judge John Roach instructed Anthony to stand.

Defense attorney Mike Howard placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

Then the judge announced the decision.

Jurors rejected the defense’s argument that the killing occurred under sudden passion.

Anthony was sentenced to 35 years in state prison.

Under Texas law, he must serve at least half of that sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

Moments later, the judge ordered that he be taken into custody.

The sentencing brought immediate reactions throughout the courtroom.

One witness later described what she observed after the decision was announced.

“When they gave that man the verdict, he broke down and cried,” she told reporters outside the courthouse.

She described the atmosphere as deeply somber and emotional.

According to her account, Anthony’s mother also became overwhelmed with emotion after hearing the sentence.

The witness struggled to find words while reflecting on the moment.

“I’m lost for words,” she said.

As media coverage continued following the sentencing, a newly released mugshot of Anthony quickly spread across social media.

The image sparked intense debate online.

Some commenters focused on his expression, while others discussed the outcome of the trial itself.

The reactions reflected how deeply divided public opinion remained even after the jury reached its decision.

Yet inside the courtroom, the focus remained on the human consequences of what had happened.

The final hours of the trial revealed grief from Austin Metcalf’s family, regret expressed by Anthony’s supporters, and emotional testimony from people whose lives were permanently changed by a confrontation that lasted only moments.

The legal proceedings may now be over.

    The verdict has been delivered.

    The sentence has been imposed.

But for both families, the impact of April 2, 2025, will continue long after the courtroom doors have closed.

One family is left mourning a son whose future was taken away.

The other faces decades of separation and consequences.

And while the case has reached its legal conclusion, the pain, loss, and emotions that filled the courtroom are likely to remain for years to come.
