    Chapter 1: The Zipper in the Dark

    At exactly 3:07 in the morning, the violent sound of a suitcase zipper slicing through the darkness shattered the cheap motel room like the opening crack of a gunshot.

    I woke instantly.

    My heart hammered against my ribs as I turned on the thin mattress and saw my husband, Mark, standing near the foot of the bed. He was not panicking. He was not ashamed. He was folding shirts with cold, careful precision, packing his future while our daughter slept three feet away under a blanket with cartoon stars.

    “Mark?” I whispered.

    He did not answer.

    The motel smelled of damp carpet, old smoke, and the instant noodles we had shared for dinner because we could not afford anything else. Our life had already been stripped down to almost nothing.

    Now he was taking even the illusion that we were still a family.

    Outside, headlights swept across the curtains.
