Three men stepped into the restaurant wearing dark coats and emotionless expressions.
They did not look like police. They did not look like criminals either. They carried themselves with the quiet confidence of people who never needed to raise their voices to be obeyed.
Cass recognized them immediately.
Her face hardened.
The tallest man smiled. “Cassandra Mercer. You made yourself very difficult to find.”
Victor blinked, suddenly realizing he had walked into a story much larger than his own revenge mission.
Marcus’s hand tightened around the edge of the booth.
“Who are they?” he asked.
Cass did not take her eyes off the men.
“The reason I disappeared.”
The tallest man stepped forward. “You stole something that didn’t belong to you.”
Cass’s voice dropped.
“No. I saved someone who didn’t belong to you.”
From behind the kitchen doors came a small sound.
A child’s voice.
“Cass?”
