‘American Idol’ Season 24 Finale Results Called ‘Rigged’ by Some Viewers After Shocking Elimination

The final three contestants — Hannah Harper, Jordan McCullough, and Keyla Richardson — opened the night by performing songs connected to mentor Alicia Keys.

Harper performed “No One” with a folk-inspired bluegrass twist that immediately impressed the judges. Lionel Richie praised her ability to make the song entirely her own, while Luke Bryan compared her voice to “walking through a beautiful garden.”

Richardson followed with an emotional version of “Unthinkable,” earning praise from Carrie Underwood, who reportedly told her she was clearly ready for “whatever amazing things are going to come next.” Bryan also applauded Richardson’s determination and growth throughout the season.

McCullough then closed the round with “If I Ain’t Got You,” delivering a confident performance that earned another wave of praise. Alicia Keys reportedly called his performance “money,” while Underwood joked that his future career would likely make him plenty of it.

The second round shifted the mood completely as the finalists returned with emotional hometown tributes.

Harper performed her original song “Married Into This Town,” dedicating it to her husband and hometown. Underwood became visibly emotional while praising Harper for beginning and ending her “Idol” journey with original music.

Richardson then delivered a powerful rendition of “I Love the Lord” as a tribute to Pensacola, Florida. The performance moved Underwood to tears, while judges praised Richardson for using her voice to inspire others.

McCullough followed with “Dear God,” prompting Underwood to jokingly ask whether the competition could somehow end in a “three-way tie.”

But the emotional atmosphere quickly shifted when the first elimination was announced.

After the first two rounds, viewers learned that Richardson had received the lowest number of votes, officially eliminating her from the competition and leaving Harper and McCullough as the final two contestants.

    The reaction online was immediate.

Many fans flooded social media expressing disbelief over Richardson’s elimination. Some viewers insisted she had been the strongest vocalist left in the competition, while others claimed the results made no sense at all.

One viewer wrote that they were “stunned” by the result, while another insisted “America got it wrong.” Others argued that Richardson’s elimination would not stop her future success, comparing her situation to other artists who lost talent competitions but still built major careers afterward.

    Not every fan agreed, however.

Some viewers suggested that while Richardson’s voice was undeniably strong, her on-camera reactions toward other contestants may have affected public perception. Others argued that Harper had built stronger audience support throughout the season.

Still, the elimination became the defining controversy of the finale.

With Richardson gone, Harper and McCullough returned to perform one final time before the winner was announced.

Harper revisited her original audition song “String Cheese,” while McCullough performed another emotional rendition of “Goodness of God,” earning another standing ovation from the judges.

    Then came the final moment.

Standing center stage beside Ryan Seacrest, Harper and McCullough waited as America’s votes were revealed. Seacrest ultimately announced Hannah Harper as the official winner of Season 24, with McCullough finishing as runner-up.

The result immediately triggered another wave of heated reactions online.

Some fans insisted McCullough should have won, while others argued Harper had been the standout contestant from the very beginning. A number of viewers accused the show of favoring popularity over vocal performance, while supporters celebrated Harper’s victory and predicted she would become a major country music star.

Others praised the show for finally crowning another female country artist after years without one.

On Reddit and Facebook, debates over whether the competition was “rigged” spread quickly, with viewers analyzing everything from editing choices to contestant screen time during the finale.

The divided reaction reminded many fans of the backlash surrounding Season 23, when Jamal Roberts defeated runner-up John Foster the previous year.

At the time, viewers also accused the show of unfair voting results, with many insisting Foster should have won. Others defended Roberts and pointed out that both finalists were likely headed for successful careers regardless of the outcome.

Now, with another dramatic finale behind it, “American Idol” once again proved why it continues to dominate online conversation after every season-ending result.

Whether fans loved the outcome or hated it, one thing became very clear by the end of the night:

People could not stop talking about it.
