The statement continued by confirming that doctors had placed the singer into a medically induced coma as part of her treatment.
According to multiple reports from Portuguese and British outlets, doctors later attempted to bring Tyler out of the coma when complications reportedly triggered a cardiac arrest, requiring medical staff to resuscitate her. She remains under intensive care in Faro, Portugal, where doctors are also working to control a serious infection with antibiotics.
A close family friend, Liberto Mealha, shared a worrying update during an appearance on Good Morning Britain, explaining that while doctors remain hopeful, the situation is still serious.
“I could not see her because she’s in intensive care, but we are praying for better news. The doctors are positive with the situation, but so far it’s not that good.”
Mealha’s daughter is reportedly Tyler’s goddaughter, and he has remained close to the singer and her family for years.
Tyler, whose real name is Gaynor Hopkins, has long divided her time between Portugal’s Algarve region and her home in South Wales. Friends say she initially began feeling unwell while performing in London earlier this year, though early medical checks reportedly failed to detect the seriousness of the condition. After traveling to Portugal, her abdominal pain worsened, eventually leading to emergency surgery.
In recent years, Tyler had spoken openly about some of her health struggles, particularly problems with her knees. Despite those issues, she remained active and continued touring throughout Europe.
“I’m fit enough at the moment, touch wood, and I’m really enjoying doing the shows,”
she previously told Hello! Magazine, adding that she maintained her health with short Pilates routines and regular activity.
Tyler became one of the defining voices of the 1970s and 1980s with hits including It’s a Heartache, Holding Out for a Hero, and her worldwide classic Total Eclipse of the Heart. Her distinctive raspy voice and dramatic performances made her one of the most recognizable singers of her era.
Her representatives have since pushed back against what they described as “lurid and untrue rumours” circulating online, while confirming that Tyler remains seriously ill but stable as doctors continue treatment.
Fans across social media continue to flood comment sections with messages of support, hoping the iconic singer will recover and return home safely.
