‘Never-before-seen’ footage shows attempts to rescue caver who died ‘worst death imaginable’

What began as a routine cave exploration in Utah ended in one of the most horrifying tragedies modern rescue teams have ever faced — and years later, the story of John Edward Jones still leaves people shaken.

In November 2009, the 26-year-old medical student, husband, and father entered Utah’s infamous Nutty Putty Cave with friends and family members, expecting another adventurous day underground. Instead, he became trapped in a nightmare that would ultimately cost him his life and permanently change the caving world forever.

John had always loved exploring tight cave systems and narrow underground passages. Nutty Putty Cave, located near Utah Lake, had long attracted thrill-seeking explorers because of its twisting tunnels and extremely confined spaces. But deep inside the cave system, John mistakenly entered an unmapped passage he believed was part of a familiar route.

    It wasn’t.

The tunnel narrowed into a tiny opening measuring roughly 10 inches high and 18 inches wide. As John pushed forward headfirst, gravity pulled him deeper until he became completely wedged upside down.

There was no room to turn around.

    No room to crawl backward.

And soon, almost no room to breathe.

The terrifying position left him hanging vertically with blood rushing toward his head, placing enormous pressure on his heart and lungs. Every breath became more dangerous than the last. Each time his chest expanded, it pushed him even tighter into the rock surrounding him.

His brother Josh was with him during the expedition and desperately tried pulling him free, but the cave walls held John like concrete. Realizing the situation was spiraling into disaster, Josh crawled back through the cave system and rushed to the surface to call for help.

What followed became one of the largest and most emotionally devastating cave rescue efforts in American history.

For nearly 27 exhausting hours, rescuers worked nonstop underground trying to save John. Teams squeezed through dangerous passages carrying ropes, pulleys, medical equipment, and drilling tools. Some rescuers risked their own lives crawling through the unstable tunnels just to reach him.

A newly released documentary from the YouTube channel EWU Unsolved has now revealed never-before-seen footage from inside the cave, offering an even more heartbreaking look at the rescue mission.

The footage shows exhausted rescuers discussing possible strategies while surrounded by ropes and climbing equipment in the cramped darkness underground. At several points, teams attempted to widen the passage by chipping away at the surrounding rock, hoping to create enough space to free him.

    But progress was agonizingly slow.

The deeper problem was John’s position. Because he was trapped headfirst at such a severe angle, his body was slowly shutting down. Medical experts later explained that remaining inverted for that long causes intense stress on the cardiovascular system. His breathing became shallower over time, and rescuers reported that he drifted in and out of consciousness.

Among those involved in the rescue was caver and YouTuber Brandon Kowallis, who later recalled the emotional final hours underground.

Rescuers eventually brought John a radio so he could speak to his family members one last time.

According to Kowallis, John’s father, mother, and wife all spoke to him while rescue crews continued trying to save him.

His loved ones told him they loved him.

    They prayed with him.

His father gave him a blessing.

And his wife tried comforting him by saying she felt peace and believed everything would somehow be okay.

One of the most chilling moments shown in the documentary captures John still moving his feet slightly during the final rescue attempts — proof that he was still alive and fighting despite the impossible conditions around him.

    Then the movements stopped.

In one final effort, crews attempted to use a complex rope-and-pulley system to pull him free from the narrow passage. For a brief moment, rescuers believed they might actually succeed.

    Then disaster struck again.

    The pulley system failed.

Instead of freeing him, the malfunction caused John to slip even deeper into the cave than before, making rescue nearly impossible.

At that point, rescuers were forced to confront the devastating truth: they could no longer save him without risking additional lives.

John Edward Jones died trapped inside Nutty Putty Cave.

    He was never recovered.

Authorities later sealed the cave permanently to ensure another tragedy like this could never happen again. A memorial plaque and wreath were placed near the entrance in honor of the young husband and father whose final hours captured worldwide attention.

Even now, more than a decade later, the story continues haunting people because of its unimaginable circumstances — a man trapped alive in complete darkness, surrounded by rescuers who never stopped trying to reach him.

The newly released footage only deepens that heartbreak.

It shows not just a tragic accident, but the emotional collapse of hope in real time — rescuers refusing to give up, family members praying from above ground, and a young father fighting for his life inside a space barely larger than his own body.

For many viewers, it remains one of the most terrifying and heartbreaking survival stories ever recorded.
