Gary Burghoff, fondly remembered for his role as the lovable 18-year-old Radar in the hit series MAS*H, has always had a special place in the hearts of viewers. His award-winning performance in the show propelled his popularity and brand to significant heights.
Burghoff’s sudden departure from the show, however, left fans heartbroken. He felt he wasn’t receiving the acknowledgment he deserved and decided to call it quits. Interestingly, his departure from the show was not solely due to professional reasons. His marriage in 1971 to Janet Gayle was going through a rough patch, and the arrival of their daughter, Gena, in 1975, seemed to demand his attention off the screen.
Following his exit from MAS*H in 1979, the producers attempted to lure him back with a $4 million offer, which would have catapulted him to the position of the highest-paid actor at the time. But Burghoff declined. He chose to prioritize his personal life and spend quality time with his family and friends.
In 1985, Burghoff found love again and married Elizabeth Bolstrom. The couple was blessed with two children, Miles and Jordan. Now in his 80s, Burghoff is embracing the joys of being a grandfather. Miles and his wife recently welcomed a baby girl, Rylee Elisabeth Burghoff, on March 23, 2023. Miles shared this heartwarming news, along with beautiful pictures of his wife and newborn daughter, on social media, igniting joy among their followers.
Miles shares a close bond with his father, Gary. Though Miles didn’t pursue acting, he has inherited his father’s passion for fishing. In fact, Gary has been a mentor and partner to Miles in their shared fishing adventures. The importance of this shared hobby is evident from the fact that Gary was out fishing when he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1977. He humorously recalled, “It was my lifetime moment, and I wasn’t there.”
Apart from being a wonderful actor and family man, Gary has a compassionate side too. He participated in a GoFundMe campaign to help those affected by the California fires around four years ago. This gesture touched many of his fans, with one saying, “OMG, I remember him from when I was a little child watching MASH. He still has the same appearance and voice. Good to see you, Mr. Burghoff.”
“I’m donating not only because there is a need but also because I feel I owe you something. I admired your art while watching MASH as a child. I’m re-watching it on Netflix with my wife. You amused me by making me think, feel, and laugh. Jordan, thank you for sharing this.” – Anonymous Fan
As we reflect on Gary’s journey, we wish him the very best in life. His legacy as a beloved actor, dedicated family man, and compassionate human being continues to inspire many.
