Mark Wahlberg: A Balancing Act of Faith and Fame
Renowned actor Mark Wahlberg, famous for his roles in numerous Hollywood blockbusters, doesn’t shy away from expressing his Catholic faith publicly. However, he likes to keep his personal communion with God under wraps. A common sight is the actor donning an ash cross on his forehead, signifying the onset of Lent.
Faith – A Personal Matter
The 51-year-old star discussed his religious outlook with co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, expressing the importance of striking a balance. Wahlberg insisted on not imposing his faith on others. He stated, “It’s a balance. I don’t want to push my beliefs on anyone, that would be a greater sin. Even though it’s not popular in my industry, I cannot hide my faith. I believe it’s essential to share this with others. However, it’s equally important to respect those with different backgrounds and faiths.”
An Influential Parent, Not a Pushy One
Wahlberg maintains the same philosophy when it comes to his four children, who he shares with his wife, Rhea Durham. He doesn’t push his religious beliefs on them but allows them to observe and decide for themselves. “They know that their dad can’t start his day without praying, reading scriptures, or going to Mass. Ideally, they’ll see the positive effects in me and naturally gravitate towards it,” said Wahlberg.
Observing Lent – Fasting and Reflection
During a discussion with Savannah about Lent and the accompanying fasting periods, Wahlberg, who is a guest narrator and paid ambassador for the Catholic prayer app, Hallow, expounded on what the season means for him.
He discussed the significance of fasting, noting its various aspects and impacts. “God knows what we need to distance ourselves from. We all know our behaviors that don’t make us feel great and bring guilt. So, it’s about taking a step back and focusing on positive habits rather than harmful ones,” explained Wahlberg.
Disciplinary Rewards
As part of the Pray40 Lent Challenge on the Hallow app, Wahlberg will guide listeners through enlightening teachings on the discipline of fasting. He believes that the discipline required to endure the rigors of Lent helps people become better versions of themselves.
“Discipline has always been important to me. I found that I needed more discipline when I transitioned from music to movies. This discipline has given me so many other things and has rewarded me in many ways. Whether through fasting, exercising more, distancing from certain activities, or simply spending more time in prayer or introspective thinking, these things are essential,” Wahlberg observed.
Faith – A Guiding Light
Asked to encapsulate his religious belief, Wahlberg stated, “Oh, it’s everything.” He credited his faith for the myriad opportunities he’s had in life. He asserted, “God did not come to save the righteous, but the guilty. Focusing on my faith has allowed me to strive for a better version of myself, which is something we all aspire to do.”
