Pope Francis to Undergo Surgery for Abdominal Hernia: A Recovery Journey Expected
Pope Francis, 86, will be undergoing a surgical procedure to address the “recurring, painful, and progressively worsening” symptoms of an abdominal hernia, according to a Vatican statement. The surgery, which will take place at Rome’s A. Gemelli University Hospital, is expected to require a substantial recovery period. However, a full recovery is predicted for the Holy Father.
Abdominal Hernia Surgery: A Necessary Step
After conducting regular medical checks in Rome, the Pope was admitted to the hospital due to the hernia’s escalating symptoms. He will be put under general anesthesia for the surgical procedure, a laparotomy and plastic surgery of the abdominal wall using a prosthesis. This decision to operate came after the Pope experienced a notable decrease in comfort and an increase in pain from the hernia.
Following his General Audience, the Pope made his way to the A. Gemelli University Hospital, where he was prepared for the early afternoon procedure. Despite the serious nature of his condition, The New York Times reported that Pope Francis managed to retain his signature sense of humor during the customary Wednesday morning general audience in St. Peter’s Square.
Post-Surgery Recovery: A Matter of Days
The Vatican anticipates that the Pope’s hospital stay will extend over several days to facilitate the typical postoperative course and ensure complete functional recovery. His hospitalization follows a treatment period in late March for bronchitis, during which the Pope was admitted to the Gemelli Polyclinic hospital and treated with intravenous antibiotics.
The Pope’s health condition has been closely monitored, and he has displayed resilience and positivity. On his departure from the hospital post bronchitis treatment, when asked about his health, he quipped, “Still alive, you know.”
Recent Health Concerns
Prior to his hospitalization, Pope Francis reportedly experienced some respiratory difficulties, as stated by Matteo Bruni from the Vatican, which prompted a visit to Policlinico A. Gemelli for medical checks. Further tests (excluding for COVID-19) revealed a respiratory infection necessitating a few days of appropriate hospital medical treatment. Despite the health setbacks, the Pope’s spirit remains high, and he is thankful for the many supportive messages and prayers he has received.
Before this hospital admission for the respiratory infection, reports indicate that the Pope had given a speech during his weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square. The Vatican subsequently clarified that his subsequent hospital admission was for “previously scheduled tests,” laying the foundation for his current surgical intervention.
The Pope’s health journey has been closely watched by the world, and the support and prayers of the faithful have buoyed his spirit. Despite these challenges, the unwavering strength and positivity shown by Pope Francis continue to inspire many worldwide.
