Three participants on a recent edition of one of the most popular quiz shows, Jeopardy!, failed to respond to what appeared to be a fairly straightforward question about Christianity, leading many to wonder about Americans and their religion.
In particular, one of the questions in the category “dadjectives” during the show that aired on June 13 was “Matthew 6:9 says, “Our Father Who Art In Heaven,” This “Be Thy Name.” According to the rules of the quiz, the participants were meant to respond with “hallowed” or more precisely, “what is hallowed,” but they didn’t. This, allegedly, infuriated a sizable number of admirers.
“On Jeopardy last night, not a single contestant understood the solution…Are you awake yet? a Twitter user questioned.
Knowing the Lord’s Prayer as a child was similar to learning the Pledge of Allegiance. You simply did,” said a second.
Although it might not be a portent of the end times, a third person commented that it “definitely speaks volumes about Americans and their faith…or lack thereof.”
Nobody could help but marvel how it was possible for everyone to miss such a clear indication.
One Twitter user said, “I’m an atheist yet even I knew the answer to the lord’s prayer question.
“My 4-year-old niece correctly answered this Jeopardy question! Could it be that the participants have never heard of The Lord’s Prayer? more was added.
What kind of Jeopardy! Nerds wouldn’t know the solution. Are they unfamiliar with Iron Maiden? Someone made a joke about the Iron Maiden tune “Hallowed Be Thy Name.”
Nevertheless, despite the fact that the question was quite straightforward, some observers claimed that the participants probably refrained from answering because of their current low scores. They might have decided to take it easy rather than take a chance and get further behind.
Others contend that the questionnaire asks too many questions about Christianity given the diversity of the participants’ religious backgrounds, which may be another factor contributing to their failure to respond to an apparent straightforward question.
The three competitors performed slightly better when it came to ’70s movies, despite the fact that none of them knew the Lord’s Prayer. The last question was, “He starred in the two movies whose soundtracks were the top two selling albums of 1978.” The soundtracks of Grease and Saturday Night Fever were playing, and as they could have imagined, they knew the correct response was Travolta, John. Suresh Krishnan, the victor, increased his winning streak to six games.
