Julian Lennon Performs “Imagine” in Support of Ukraine
Julian Lennon, the son of the legendary John Lennon, recently broke his own vow to never perform his father’s iconic peace anthem, “Imagine.” The musician had previously stated that he would only sing the song if the world was on the brink of destruction and needed to hear its powerful message. However, in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Julian felt compelled to publicly perform the song as part of the 2022 Global Citizen’s Stand Up for Ukraine campaign.
A Meaningful Response to Tragedy
Julian expressed that the “unimaginable tragedy” unfolding in Ukraine drove him to respond in the most impactful way possible. He recognized that his father’s song resonated deeply during times of crisis and believed it could provide a glimmer of hope in the midst of darkness. Julian wrote, “The song reflects the light at the end of the tunnel that we are all hoping for… Millions of innocent families have been forced to leave their homes due to the ongoing violent conflict, seeking refuge elsewhere.”
Since the war erupted in Ukraine in late February, over 4.5 million people have been displaced from their homes, seeking safety and security as refugees.
Global Support for Ukraine
During the Global Citizen’s fundraiser, where Julian delivered his heartfelt performance, an astounding $10 billion was pledged to support refugees from Ukraine. The contributions came from governments, companies, and individuals worldwide, with half of the donations originating from generous supporters. The remaining half consisted of grants and loans from European financial institutions.
Advocating for Refugees Everywhere
Julian Lennon, the son of John Lennon and Cynthia Lennon, passionately urged people not only to assist Ukrainian refugees but also to support individuals seeking better lives globally. He appealed to world leaders and all those who resonate with the spirit of “Imagine” to stand up for refugees worldwide and make a difference.
“I’m calling on world leaders and everyone who believes in the sentiment of ‘Imagine’ to stand up for refugees everywhere! Please advocate and donate from the heart.”
Julian’s moving rendition of “Imagine” and his impassioned plea to help the victims of the Ukrainian war are truly awe-inspiring. Let us share his version of the song to spread awareness, compassion, and peace across the globe.
