About two years ago, the country singer disclosed his diagnosis with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), a group of disorders leading to nerve damage. The condition has affected Jackson’s mobility and equilibrium on stage, with the initial diagnosis confirmed in 2011. However, he successfully concealed his health struggles from his fanbase until the symptoms became increasingly severe.
CMT disease results in the degeneration of peripheral nerves, culminating in muscle weakness in the body’s extremities, as defined by the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). An estimated 126,000 individuals in the U.S., and over 2.5 million people globally, live with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. The majority of CMT disease cases are inherited.
Persistent Passion for Music
Despite his health issues, Jackson continues to pursue his passion for creating music. During an appearance on his daughter Mattie Jackson’s podcast, ‘In Joy Life,’ he shared, “I’m always scribbling down ideas and thinking about melodies… I feel like there’ll be some more music to come, yes.”
When queried about his plans for a new album, Jackson replied affirmatively, bringing delight to his fans. He further mentioned that, even though he is not touring, his creative side occasionally surfaces.
Recognitions and Reflections on Career
At the 56th annual CMA, Jackson was honored with the association’s Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. The country music star stepped on the stage to a standing ovation. Reflecting on his journey, Jackson expressed, “Country music’s been really good to me. I fell in love with it when I was a young man.”
However, he shared on his daughter’s podcast that songwriting is what he finds most rewarding in his career, even more so than performing. He explained that creating an album, especially when it involves writing many of the songs, brings a sense of fulfillment and engagement.
A Walk Down Memory Lane
Jackson began his career performing in night clubs and local bars while working as a mechanic. His big break came when he signed with Arista Records in Nashville and launched his debut record, ‘Here in the Real World,’ in 1985. From then on, his career took off.
Hailing from Georgia, Jackson has been married to Denise since 1979, and they have three children together.
