George Maharis, celebrated for his roles in “Route 66” and “Fantasy Island,” captivated millions worldwide with his enigmatic charm and striking good looks. His portrayal of Buz Murdock in “Route 66” brought him widespread recognition, earning him a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Continued Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Series.
“My dear friend, you will be terribly missed,” expressed Marc Bahan, George Maharis’s lifelong companion, who took care of him in his final years.
George Maharis’s journey began in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens, where he grew up. After serving in the United States Marine Corps for 18 months, he embarked on his show business career. In 1958, Maharis landed his first acting role in Jean Genet’s off-Broadway production, “Deathwatch.”
Two years later, he made his cinematic debut as a freedom fighter in the film “Exodus.” His television career took off even before his appearance in “Naked City” when he starred in the soap opera “Search for Tomorrow.”
“Route 66,” a spin-off of “Naked City,” solidified Maharis’s place in the industry. However, after three seasons as Buz Murdock, his health deteriorated, leading to his departure from CBS in 1962 due to hepatitis.
Throughout the 1960s, George Maharis graced the silver screen with his presence in notable films like “Quick Before It Melts” (1964), “Sylvia” (1965), “A Covenant with Death” (1967), and “The Happening” (1967).
In the 1970s, the actor made guest appearances on popular shows including “The Most Deadly Game,” “Mission: Impossible,” and “Fantasy Island.”
“George is famous for many things: being a celebrity on ‘Route 66,’ performing on stage, singing, being an artist, and, above all, being a wonderful person who would do anything for anyone,” wrote Marc Bahan in a Facebook post announcing George Maharis’s passing on Wednesday, May 25th.
