Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll,’ passed away peacefully today at 83 in her home in Kusnacht, Switzerland, near Zurich, after a protracted illness. With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model.
Turner’s health had been in decline in recent times, with a diagnosis of intestinal cancer in 2016 and a subsequent kidney transplant in 2017.
Her electrifying stage presence and high-energy live performances left an indelible mark on the music industry. Mick Jagger himself acknowledged the influence of Turner’s dynamic shows on his own stage persona, emphasizing the significant role she played in highlighting the contributions of Black women in the early days of rock ‘n’ roll.
After enduring a challenging partnership with her controlling husband Ike Turner for two decades, Tina Turner embarked on a solo career that solidified her status as a prominent pop idol of the 1980s. Her album “Private Dancer” marked a turning point in her career, propelling her to immense success. Multiple memoirs, a biography, a jukebox musical, and the acclaimed documentary “Tina” all provide insights into her extraordinary life journey.
Early Life and Musical Journey
Tina Turner, born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939, spent her early years in Nutbush, Tennessee, where she vividly remembers picking cotton alongside her family. Her passion for singing emerged during her teenage years, and she used her vocal talents to secure a spot in Ike Turner’s band in St. Louis. Initially rejected, she caught Ike’s attention when she took the stage during a Kings of Rhythm performance, delivering a captivating rendition of BB King’s “You Know I Love You.”
Ike gave her the name Tina Turner after seeing her vocal prowess and registered the name as a trademark in case she left him, and he wanted to replace her in his show. When Turner attempted to leave the group early on after getting a feel of his erratic nature, he beat her with a wooden shoe stretcher. He immediately turned nasty.
Despite facing adversity in her personal life, Turner’s talent shone through. In July 1960, she made her recorded debut as Tina Turner with the release of the single “A Fool in Love,” which achieved success on the US charts.
Rise to Fame and Musical Collaborations
While their recorded music garnered attention, it was their live performances that propelled Ike and Tina Turner to stardom. Ike extensively toured the Ike and Tina Turner Revue, captivating audiences on the Chitlin’ Circuit, including desegregated crowds.
In the late 1960s, the duo attracted the attention of prominent rock musicians. They toured with the Rolling Stones, collaborated with Phil Spector on the single “River Deep – Mountain High,” and welcomed illustrious guests like David Bowie, Sly Stone, Cher, Elvis Presley, and Elton John during their Las Vegas residency.
They were a powerhouse on the charts and Grammy winners in the 1970s, but their run came to an end when Turner split up with Ike in 1976 because he had been abusive and disloyal regularly.
Turner’s final collaboration with the group was the song “Baby, Get It On,” featured in the 1975 film adaptation of the Who’s rock opera “Tommy,” where she portrayed the character Acid Queen, coincidentally sharing the name with her second solo album.
A Triumph over Adversity
The divorce between Tina and Ike Turner was finalized in 1978, resulting in Tina receiving only two cars and retaining the rights to her stage name. In the documentary “Tina,” she shared that Ike fought against her keeping the name, aware of the transformative path she would embark upon.
Ike fought a little bit because he knew what I would do with it.
Tina Turner’s resilience and remarkable journey serve as an inspiration to countless individuals worldwide. Her impact on the music industry and her status as a cultural icon will forever endure.
Rest in peace, Tina. Your legacy lives on.
