Allison Fisher’s Journey to a Second Chance at Life
Allison Fisher, a 20-year-old woman from Florida, is grateful for a newfound lease on life after being diagnosed with an enormous ovarian cyst. Her health ordeal began in 2020, with persistent stomach pain and irregular periods raising concerns.
However, due to previous experiences with doctors dismissing her symptoms and focusing on her weight, Allison was initially hesitant to seek medical help.
Facing Her Fears: Allison’s Decision to Address Her Health Concerns
Despite her fears, Allison eventually decided to confront her health issues head-on. As her stomach continued to grow and feel “rock hard,” she suspected that an ovarian cyst might be the cause.
“I felt like I was pregnant with 10 kids,” she described. “I couldn’t lay on my stomach. It felt like all my organs were being crushed.”
The cyst became so large that it began to affect her breathing by putting pressure on her lungs.
A Life-Changing Diagnosis: Discovering the Massive Ovarian Cyst
Around Christmas 2022, gynecologic oncology surgeon Dr. Martin Martino at Ascension St. Vincent’s confirmed that Allison had a 100-pound ovarian cyst that required immediate surgical removal. During the operation, Dr. Martino also discovered that her left ovary was twisted three times. Fortunately, he was able to untwist it and preserve Allison’s future fertility.
A New Beginning: Allison Fisher’s Road to Recovery and Weight-Loss Surgery
Following the successful surgery, Allison is now eager to embrace her second chance at life. She can now enjoy activities that were once impossible and is looking forward to beginning weight-loss surgery.
Allison’s story serves as a powerful reminder to seek medical help when unwell, regardless of any fears or hesitations.
“There are other people out there who are in my shoes, other bigger people, who are just so scared to go to the doctor because of their weight,” she said. “I just want them to know that they shouldn’t be scared.”
